How to type functions
| You want | Type |
|---|---|
| a power, x³ | x^3 |
| a square root | sqrt(x) or √x |
| trigonometric functions (in radians) | sin(x), cos(x), tan(x) |
| an exponential | e^x, 2^x |
| natural and base-10 logarithm | ln(x), log(x) |
| absolute value | abs(x) |
| floor | floor(x) |
Drag the graph with the mouse or a finger to move it. The mouse wheel and a two-finger pinch zoom, and a double-click zooms in at that spot. Fit height adjusts the y axis to show the whole curve in the current x range.
How the key points are found
Zeros are found where the function changes sign, then narrowed down by bisection. Local extrema use golden-section search, and intersections are the zeros of the difference between two functions. Results are rounded to six significant digits. For exact solutions of polynomial equations, use the equation solver.
Common questions
How do I plot a function?
Type the formula into the f₁(x) box, such as x^2 − 4 or 2sin(x). The graph appears straight away. Add more functions with Add a function, up to six.
How do I find the zeros of a function?
Zeros, extrema and y-intercepts are marked with dots on the graph and listed below it. They are found in the visible x range, so zoom out if a point is missing.
How do I type powers, roots or absolute values?
Use ^ for powers, such as x^3. The square root is sqrt(x) or √x, the absolute value abs(x), the natural log ln(x) and the base-10 log log(x). You can leave out the multiplication sign: 2x and 3sin(x) work.
Why does the graph of tan(x) or 1/x have gaps?
These functions have vertical asymptotes, where they are undefined. The graph breaks there instead of joining huge positive and negative values with a vertical line.
How do I save or share a graph?
Download PNG saves an image of the graph with a legend. Copy link stores the functions and the view in the page address, so anyone who opens it sees the same graph.
