Fraction calculator
Type a sum such as 1 1/2 + 3/4 or (2/3 − 1/6) · 4. You get the answer as a simplified fraction, a mixed number and a decimal.
Result
common denominator: 4
3/2 + 3/4 = 6/4 + 3/4 = 9/4
How to add fractions
Fractions with different denominators are brought to a common denominator, ideally the least common multiple: 1/4 + 1/6 = 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12. To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal.
Repeating decimals
A number like 0.(3) = 0.333… can be written as a fraction. If x = 0.(3), then 10x = 3.(3), so 10x − x = 3 and x = 1/3. The tool does this for any repeating part, e.g. 0.1(6) = 1/6.
Common questions
How do I type a mixed number?
Whole part, space, fraction: 2 3/4. A minus in front applies to the whole mixed number: −2 3/4 = −11/4.
Are the results exact?
Yes. The calculations use fractions with arbitrarily large numerators and denominators, with no rounding.
