Quartiles use linear interpolation (like QUARTILE.INC in Excel).
Mean, median and mode
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once sorted, so single extreme values barely move it: in the sample data, 22 pulls the mean up but hardly changes the median. The mode is the most frequent value.
Sample or population standard deviation?
If your data is the whole population (say, every part in a batch), use σ, which divides by n. If it is a sample you use to draw conclusions about the whole, use s, which divides by n − 1. Spreadsheets have STDEV.P and STDEV.S for these.
The box plot
The box covers the middle 50% of the data (Q1 to Q3) and the line inside is the median. The whiskers reach the furthest values within 1.5·IQR of the box, and circles mark outliers.
Common questions
How do I paste from Excel?
Select the column, copy it (Ctrl+C) and paste it into the data box. Each cell goes on its own line.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Your browser does the calculations on your device. The values only go into the page address, so you can share a link to the result.
