BMI calculator
BMI is a simple measure for adults. It doesn’t tell muscle from fat, so treat it as a rough guide.

BMI
Category (WHO)
- Healthy weight for this height
- 58.6 – 78.9 kg
BMI = kg / m²
The categories are for adults. For children and teenagers BMI is read from growth charts, and for athletes, pregnant women and older people it can mislead. If in doubt, talk to a doctor.
How BMI is calculated
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For 72 kg and 178 cm: 72 / 1.78² ≈ 22.7. According to the WHO, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above is obesity.
BMI doesn’t measure body composition. Someone with a lot of muscle can have a high BMI and be healthy, which is why doctors also look at waist size and other tests.
